Don’t Start Too Big :

trekking tips for beginners

If it is your first time, you must consider an easy grade trek assuming that you are not sure of your stamina or physical strength. This will surely give you a positive experience and motivate you to do more treks in future .

Physical Strength :

Trekking for beginners

Make sure that you are well prepared for the trek in advance by doing some leg strengthening exercises and cardio to build the stamina for the trek. This will help you in enjoying the trek instead of struggling to maintain pace with fellow trekkers if you are joining a group.

Hydration :

When you feel thirsty on trek, try to sip small amount of water more frequently than drinking too much at once considering you will be in need of water till the trek ends or even after that (Assuming the non availability of water).

Trekking Fuel :

Similarly to Hydration, your energy requirements will also increase while trekking, however I would recommend you to eat once you reach at the top (as it is obviously a small trek). You can eat a fruit while trekking ( An Orange or Apple) to cope with your midway hunger pangs.

Trekking Stuff to Carry :

Assuming that you are going for an easy trek where you don’t need any technical equipment, I have listed down some of very basic things which you need to carry
  • A Small Rucksack or Backpack
  • Comfortable Trekking Clothes ( You must consider your clothing according to the season)
  • Good Trekking Shoes
  • Water Bottle ( You must carry minimum 2 liters of water even for an easy grade trek )
  • First Aid Box or Necessary Medicines
  • Light Snacks – Fruits or Packed food ( Assuming If the food is available at the Base Village)
  • An Energy Drink if needed
  • Small Garbage Bag
  • Hat or Sunglasses

Trek To Rajmachi

Rajmachi Trek

Rajmachi (Udhewadi) is a small village in the rugged mountains of Sahyadri in India. The fortification at Rajmachi consists of two forts, namely Shrivardhan fort and Manaranjan Fort. Rajmachi Fort is a popular trekking destination. It is a very famous fort located near two famous hills of Maharashtra, Lonavala and Khanadala.

It is about 15 km treking distance from Lonavala.

Historically, Rajmachi fort was a strategic fort to control Borghat (ghat between Khopoli and Khandala on Mumbai-Pune route) which was a historical trade route. Rajmachi peak has two fortified structures – the Shrivardhan fort and Manaranjan fort. Rajmachi can be reached by 2 ways, the tough route is from Kondivade village near Karjat and it involves climb-up of about 2000 feet. The other route is from Lonavala, which is almost a plain walk of about 15 km. In rainy season this region all the more beautiful with silvery water falls, streams and lush green forests and meadows.

Trek to Chanderi

Chanderi fort is situated in the center of the Matheran mountain range. At 790 metres, it is one of the highest points. There is a cave in its huge rock massif. The route up to the cave is a normal trekking route. From the cave, an exposed trail leads one to the topmost part of the fort. It is a risky climb in the rainy season. The view from the top is excellent. It was used as a watch-tower in olden days. A beautiful statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is situated on the top. For trekking to Chanderi, the base village is Chincholi (approachable from Badlapur & Vangani railway stations by road).

Ways To Reach :
From Chincholi :
Alight at Vangani station on the Mumbai-Karjat rail-route. From there, follow the railway track (towards Badlapur) till you reach Goregaon village. A dirt-path going to the left from the main road leads to village Chincholi at the base of the fort. It is also possible to hire a vehicle from Vangani station to get to this village.

Alternatively, you can walk down to Chincholi from Badlapur Station in about 45 minutes.

Leaving behind Chincholi towards your right there are two paths trailing upwards from either side of a small hillock. The path going from the right hand side of the hill is rocky while the path on the left hand side meanders through shrubbery growing on slippery red mud. Both the paths lead to a small peak. From here keep walking towards a ‘T’-shaped niche equidistant from the two mountains ahead. The mountain to the right is Mhasmaal while the tall pinnacle to the left is Chanderi. A little ahead of the peak lie few steams of water. The path just above these leads to the waterfalls. Once beyond the hollow of the waterfalls, start climbing on the path towards the left to reach the top. Approximately in an hour, you will reach the peak. The path is very narrow and on both sides slope steeply down to the valley. The path to the left leads to the cave.

It would be ideal to engage a guide for trekkers visiting Chanderi for the first time.

Accommodation Facility :
Cave on the fort can accommodate 8 to 10 persons.
Food Facility :
One should arrange for own foodstuffs.
Drinking Water Facility :
Drinking water is generally available in the reservoir till the end of October every year (based on the monsoons).
Time To Reach :
It takes about 1½ hrs from the village of Chincholi.
